The Germanic origins and subsequent old English use of the word ‘black’ has various meanings in many cultures and societies around the globe. The word ‘black’ can be an adjective, a noun or a verb depending on its usage and can conjure up unique and sometimes mystic interpretations.
Unfortunately, musicians of ‘colour’ or black musicians continue to represent less than two percent of artists gracing an orchestral stage. The classical music world usage of black and classical in the same sentence is tremendously under-represented and a rare occurrence among the top 10 orchestras globally.
